The struggle with procrastination

Apr 23, 2025

Struggling with procrastination? You’re not alone—and it’s not about being lazy. Sometimes, procrastination is your brain’s way of coping with stress, anxiety, or overwhelm. Here are a few simple, mental health-friendly steps to get unstuck:

💭 Get curious, not critical. Ask yourself why you’re avoiding the task. Are you afraid of messing up? Feeling burnt out? Understanding the “why” can help you choose the right next step.

🧩 Break it down. Big tasks feel… well, big. Try breaking it into tiny, manageable pieces. Instead of “write a report,” go with “open laptop” → “write one sentence.” Small wins build momentum.

Set a timer. Use the 5- or 10-minute rule. Just start. Most times, getting going is the hardest part—and once you’re in it, it’s easier to keep going.

💬 Talk kindly to yourself. That inner critic? Yeah, it’s not helping. Try replacing “I should have done this already” with “I’m doing my best, and I’m starting now.”

🌱 Check in with your needs. Are you hungry, tired, overwhelmed? Meeting your basic needs can make a huge difference in how motivated (and focused) you feel.

You’re human. Procrastination isn’t a flaw—it’s a signal. Listen with compassion, and take one small step forward. You’ve got this. 💛
